Industrial Floor Repairs Using PMMA Resin Systems

Food Oils & Fats Production Facility and Warehouse

Industrial floors within food production and logistics environments experience constant traffic from forklifts, pallet trucks, and heavy machinery. Over time this can lead to damaged expansion joints, cracked concrete, and deteriorating areas around drainage systems.

Gemstone Surfaces Ltd was appointed to carry out a series of targeted floor repairs within both the production area and warehouse of a facility specialising in food oils and fats.

The aim was to restore damaged areas of the floor quickly and effectively while allowing the facility to remain operational.

Mechanical Preparation

Existing Floor Condition

Several areas throughout the facility required repair due to wear and damage caused by ongoing operations.

The issues included:

✔ Damaged expansion joints
✔ Broken concrete along joint lines
✔ Worn and deteriorated areas around drainage channels
✔ Uneven surfaces affecting forklift and pallet truck movement
✔ Previous repairs that had failed

In busy warehouse environments, these issues can quickly worsen, leading to safety concerns and operational inefficiencies.

Joint and Concrete Repairs

The repair works began with mechanical preparation of the damaged joints and surrounding concrete to remove loose material and create a clean substrate.

This process involved:

• Opening and preparing expansion joints
• Removing failed materials and broken concrete
• Thorough cleaning and preparation of the repair areas

Damaged joints were then repaired and filled using a flexible resin system, designed to accommodate movement while providing long-term durability.

Drain Repairs in Production Areas

In the food production area, particular attention was required around drainage channels where the floor had deteriorated due to constant cleaning, moisture, and operational wear.

These areas were repaired by rebuilding damaged concrete and installing a PMMA resin repair system, creating a durable and hygienic surface around the drainage system.

PMMA resin systems are well suited to food production environments due to their:

✔ Fast curing times
✔ Excellent durability
✔ Resistance to cleaning processes
✔ Strong adhesion to concrete substrates

Levelling Uneven Floor Areas

Certain sections of the warehouse floor had become uneven due to joint failure and concrete damage, causing issues for forklifts transporting palletised products.

These areas were repaired using PMMA resin patches, restoring the level of the floor and improving operational safety.

Once installed, the repair system cured rapidly, allowing the area to be returned to service with minimal downtime.

Completed Repairs

Following completion, the repaired areas provided a smooth, durable, and level surface capable of withstanding heavy warehouse traffic.

Targeted repairs such as these allow facilities to extend the life of existing concrete floors without the cost and disruption of full replacement.

By using fast-curing PMMA resin systems, the work was completed efficiently while minimising disruption to the client’s production and warehouse operations.
